Sderot (pronounced SDEH-roht) is a working class town in the Negev desert that once held the promise of a better life to its 20,000 residents - many of them immigrants from North Africa, Ethiopia, and Russia. The bombing started in 2000 when Gaza militants fashioned inaccurate home-made rockets from household supplies. The destruction continues unabated today with continually larger, higher-tech, and more lethal missiles.
In what has become a well-rehearsed routine, Sderot's residents have fifteen seconds to run for cover when the Color Red air raid sounds. Every person in this close-knit community has experienced a Qassam exploding nearby, and has known one of the victims. Several thousand people are being treated for shock and other psychological effects. Sderot's children, many of whom know no other way of life, show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. As the rockets continue unabated, however, post-trauma is not an accurate diagnosis. Over the last seven years, thirteen people in Sderot have died, many more have sustained life-changing injuries.
